Drunken driving in Coles County

Charleston police say DUI prevention programs work

More than a million drivers were arrested on driving under the influence charges in 2006 - one of the highest DUI arrest rates in U.S. history. Of that million, 93 were arrested in Coles County. This number has progressively decreased in the last two years, with the number falling to 58 in 2007 and only 17 so far in 2008. (0) comments

Three Eastern students were arrested on Coles County warrants on the charge of an unlawful use of a credit card. Gregory D. Taylor, 18, of Champaign; Russell M. Harty, 19, of Chicago; and Robert G. Bennett, 19, of Chicago, were arrested after an investigation began in October 2007. (0) comments

Jeff Ashley lucked into teaching. "Growing up, I swore I was never going to teach," Ashley said. Ashley, a political science professor, said both his parents were public school teachers, but he did not want to follow in their footsteps because he wanted to make money. (0) comments

Fourth Street closure starts Monday

$1.45 million project to widen and resurface road

Construction of Fourth Street from Polk to Harrison avenues will start Monday, said Curt Buescher, director of Public Works, in a press release Wednesday. The first phase of the project is estimated to be complete by July 15. "Local traffic will be permitted access to their residence through the staggered barricades, and the cross streets will be open except during times when the contractor is working in the immediate area of the intersection," Buescher said in the release. Cole Rogers wants to increase the general education cultural diversity requirements from three to six credit hours. The change would not add credit hours to the graduation requirement, but would instead require six of the already nine needed credits in the humanities section to be culturally aware. (0) comments

The annual arts festival "Celebration" will take place April 25-27 on the library quad. The festival, which has taken place since 1977, offers live music, children's art activities, demonstrations, art exhibits and food booths. More than 10 musical acts will perform, while more than 40 artists will be selling their work, ranging from pottery to jewelry. (0) comments
