Relay for Life tops $50,000

Relay for Life gave Joi Brewer hope. Brewer has survived cervical cancer for 31 years and was sent into surgery within weeks of being diagnosed. "It brings hope to people who are living with cancer," Brewer said of Relay for Life. Relay for Life at Eastern was held on April 18 and 19 at the Lantz Fieldhouse, from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday. Tents, blankets, and sleeping bags were set up all over the fieldhouse for overnight participants. (0) comments

A memorial was held for student Lauren Sturgeon, 21, on Saturday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Sturgeon, a junior family and consumer sciences major, passed away at St. John's Hospital in Springfield on April 16. "Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of EIU student Lauren Sturgeon," said Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs. (0) comments

FutureGen to 'stay the course'

MATTOON - The FutureGen Alliance is moving forward to push for construction of a $1.8 billion near-zero emissions power plant in Mattoon. The alliance is lobbying the top three presidential candidates and opening an office in Mattoon, said Roger Gilchirst of the Future GenAlliance at Friday's annual Coles Together meeting, held in the Education Center at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Diane Burns thought an earthquake happening anywhere in the Midwest would be a fairly rare occurrence, but knew the possibility of one happening near Illinois still existed. The New Madrid Seismic Zone, located in the Mississippi Valley, does not extend too far, Burns said, but if a rupture occurs within the fault system, people far from the seismic zone still could feel the affects. The Board of Trustees will have to decide today whether or not to increase tuition by 12 percent for incoming freshmen and transfer students. Panther Service Day went on as scheduled Saturday and, despite the lack of many volunteers, it was considered a success. The day was created for students and other volunteers to help serve the community by cleaning up streets and doing yard work. Ceci Brinker, director of student life, said Alison Mormino started Panther Service Day five years ago when she was student body president. (0) comments

Reception honors scholarship recipients

Harold Marker remembered having school in Blair Hall with what he describes as "those little red chairs." Marker graduated from Eastern in 1937 with a degree in physics. However, Marker can remember when Blair was used for elementary school. Marker spoke at the EIU Foundation's Endowment Tea on Friday afternoon in Buzzard Auditorium. (0) comments
