The woman who reported a man attempted to kidnap her on March 27 now says the description she gave may not be accurate, said Detective Lt. Bryan Baker of the Charleston Police Department.

"The investigation led to speaking to her again," he said. "During the interview she said she could not identify the attacker other than he was a male."

She previously described the attacker as a 40-year-old black male.

Baker said the new development would broaden the search for the attacker.

The woman reported that a man tried to force her into a van at knifepoint while she was walking in the 900 block of 17th Street. The woman said she broke free from the man and ran away.

The University Police Department posted flyers on March 28 around campus to alert students of the assault.

The woman who is in her 20s is not an Eastern student, Baker said.

Currently there are no new leads in the case, he added.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact the Charleston Police Department at 345-0060.

Kooistra requests jury trial

Scott S. Kooistra requested a jury trial on Wednesday.

Kooistra also plead not guilty to charges of domestic battery.

Terese Matthews was appointed to represent Kooistra.

Kooistra, from Chicago, was charged with domestic battery after being arrested on March 1, due to an incident in Stevenson Hall.

A person can be charged with domestic battery if they intentionally or knowingly, without legal justification by any means, cause bodily harm to any family or household member, according to Illinois statutes. Domestic battery is a Class A misdemeanor and is punishable by serving time in a county jail for less than a year. A fine of $2,500, or an amount specified in the offense, whichever is greater, can be levied.

A status hearing is set for May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Coles County Court House.
