Walking Earns Rewards

The Health Education Resource Center's EIU Moves program ended Monday.

EIU Moves was a new walking program offered for the spring semester.

A total of 18 student and 48 faculty/staff members participated in the seven-week program.

The program began January 14 to try and increase physical activity on campus.

Teams of six were required to walk the distance from Charleston to Daytona Beach, Florida - a total of 1,019 miles.

Participants were given a pedometer to record how much they walked.

Weekly goals were set, and the team that met each goal was entered to win a $50 discount on air travel to any destination in Florida for all six members.

The winning team was notified Monday morning of their success.

The winning team was the only team to complete and report their total miles for all 7 weeks of the competition, said Dawn Wilcox, nutrition education coordinator for HERC.

The faculty and staff who participated did so for no prize.

Most teams walked the 1,019 miles required, but Wilcox said some did not meet the goal.

Wilcox said the program went well and set a good basis for future EIU moves programs in the coming semesters.

"Although student participation was low, I think for the first semester is was successful and will continue to grow in the future," Wilcox said.
