Daniel Parmenter, 20, last of Westchester, was a sophomore finance major and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Parmenter would often offer peoples rides to class, help friends with homework and do community service. He worked at the Northern Star newspaper as an advertising representative. The paper's adviser, Maria Krull, described him as a "gentle giant."

Catalina Garcia, 20, last of Cicero, was an education major. She was the youngest of four siblings in a family from Guadalajara, Mexico. Garcia graduated from Morton East High School in 2006, where she belonged to the yearbook club and a campus dance group. She was described as shy and bright, and a good student.

Ryanne Mace, 19, last of Carpentersville, was a sophomore psychology major.
Mace's mother said she and her husband named their only child Ryanne but pronounced it Ryan because they thought they were having a boy. Mace was the granddaughter of the Rev. Miley and Janet Palmer of Decatur. The Palmers lived in Charleston from 1973 to 1979 when Rev. Palmer served as pastor at Wesley United Methodist Church.

Julianna Gehant, 32, last of Meridan, was an elementary education major. In her 2007 Christmas card, Gehant wrote, "I have four more semesters until I am qualified to teach second-graders." Gehant, who was known as Julie, served in the U.S Army from 1993 to 2007, where she taught construction. Gehant served in Kosovo in 1998.

Gayle Dubowski, 20, last of Carol Stream, was a sophomore criminal justice major. Dubowski graduated from Glenbard North High School in 2006, where she sang in the choir. At the high school, she worked as a teacher's aide. "She was very sweet. She was sort of shy but always had a smile on her face," said Amanda Kent, an NIU student who had a second-year Russian class with Dubowski.
