Charleston's two newest police officers come from different backgrounds and joined for different reasons. Ryan Feder, 28, spent three years as an officer in Lebanon, a small town of about 4,000 residents and only 12 officers. NIU president says incident doesn't define school

A former student shot and killed six people, including himself, on Thursday at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb. The shooter, Stephen P. Kazmierczak, 27, of Elk Grove, walked into a lecture hall in Cole Hall and started shooting. Once the first 911 call was placed, it took two minutes for campus police to enter the room. (0) comments

Daniel Parmenter, 20, last of Westchester, was a sophomore finance major and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
