Taking presidency to a new level

President Bill Perry finally got all the bells and whistles of an academic welcoming. On Friday, his inauguration took place in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union. Perry assumed the presidency at Eastern on July 1, but was formally honored by the university, past presidents, legislators, dignitaries and special guests at the inauguration ceremony with full academic regalia and lots of applause. Zeta Phi Beta is not letting kind acts committed on campus go unnoticed. During its annual Thanks for Giving Week, the service-based sorority takes time before Thanksgiving break to acknowledge those in the community and on campus who have helped them the past two semesters. (0) comments

Yuletide treats and tunes

While Eastern students eagerly await Thanksgiving Break for turkey and stuffing, the city of Charleston is gearing up for its annual Christmas in the Heart of Charleston Celebration. On Sunday, What's Cookin' Restaurant hosted Yuletide Treats and Tunes - a dessert buffet and silent auction - to help fund the event. (0) comments

Not since 2003 has Eastern had an all women's play. In 2003, the play "5 Women Wearing the Same Dress" was performed. Now, women make up the entire cast of "Eleemosynary." "Eleemosynary" opened this past weekend with shows Friday and Saturday and a matinee on Sunday. (0) comments

A Veterans Day commemoration ceremony will take place in front of Old Main today at 9:30 a.m., as a tribute to thank war veterans for their service to the United States. Veterans of Foreign Wars posts from Charleston and Mattoon and the Mattoon American Legion will join the Black Knights of the Embarras and others at Eastern. (0) comments

A combination of some of Coles County's best musical talent, a history lesson and a "call for peace" filled McAfee Gym. Sunday night's "Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms" concert was more than a commemoration of Veterans Day. The Eastern Symphony Orchestra, University Mixed Chorus and members of the Symphonic Honors Initiative Program preformed together under conductor Richard Robert Rossi in the South Gymnasium of McAfee Gym. Awards presented at School of Continuing Education Open House The Office and Faculty Awards for Excellent Service to Nontraditional Students will be presented at the School of Continuing Education Open House today. The awards are part of National Nontraditional Student Week, which recognizes nontraditional students on campus, according to the Association of Nontraditional Students in Higher Education.
