AB allocates $10,000 for Spotlight Speaker

Stephanie Tanner is a step closer to coming to Eastern. Jody Sweetin of "Full House" fame is one of the Spotlight Lecture Series that University Board is looking to bring to campus. Sweetin recently overcame a methamphetamine addiction. At last night's Apportionment Board meeting the board unanimously approved a $20,000 allocation to UB lectures. (0) comments

For two decades the Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC) and the Governor of Illinois have given out Pollution Prevention Awards to companies who excel in protecting the environment and boosting the economy. For the second year in a row, Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System (SBLHS), located in Mattoon, won an award, along with 23 others. (0) comments

The Presidential Search Advisory Committee announced the number of expected applicants for the position of Eastern's next president at its first meeting Wednesday. "I think we can expect somewhere between 50 and 100 applicants," said Robert Webb, chair of the committee and member of the Board of Trustees. (0) comments

The Board of Trustees is ready to act on contracts for three unions at today's meeting, but not all three unions are ready for the board. The university administration has reached tentative agreements for contracts with the Carpenters Local 347, the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council and the Eastern chapter of the University Professionals of Illinois. Getting that grant may not be as easy as it seems but according to a panel of recipients of external funding, if a professor receives such grants the rewards are endless. The panel includes: Doug Bower, associate dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies; Scott Meiners, biological sciences professor; Michael Watts, director of Tarble Arts Center; Mona Davenport, director of Minority Affairs and Ping Liu, technology. Dianne Nelson, director of Eastern's new nursing program, is "thrilled to pieces." The Council on Academic Affairs approved the first four classes for the new nursing program's curriculum at its meeting yesterday afternoon. Eastern will offer these classes starting in Fall of 2007. (0) comments

Once abstract tunes are muted and Friends & Co. clears the room, three jazz students take their bows and retreat to school work and hectic schedules. Justin D' Angelo, a music studies and composition graduate student, said playing instruments and producing a sound from it was something that sort of happened. (0) comments

Heath Service offers preventative options to ensure students stay healthy during the last few and coldest weeks of the semester. There are a few shots students should be aware of in order to keep themselves healthy. Eastern's Health Services provides the option of the human papilloma virus, or HPV, shots, said Nita Shrader, an administrative nurse at Health Services. (0) comments

United Way is the chosen charity for Saturday's EIU Takes Action concert. The concert, sponsored by University Board, will feature four bands: The Outbreaks, Forgetting Paris, Friday Night Villain and Snowsera. All of the bands are playing at no cost and are lending their time to help support a charitable cause. (0) comments

"There's no reason not to," said Dr. Drew Pinsky who is famous for his radio and television show "Loveline." Pinsky is adamant about the shots. He had a booth at the College Media Adviser's national journalism convention on Oct. 26 to promote the vaccination and share his knowledge about the virus. (0) comments

When music majors play a student recital, family, friends and fellow students usually attend the event to show support. On Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. in McAfee North Gym, music majors Jacqueline Bretz and Elizabeth Kelling will play their student solo recitals, a graduation requirement for music majors. (0) comments

"It's not every day you get to jump into a dumpster," said Mark Bates as he stood in a trash-filled dumpster in the middle of the South Quad Thursday afternoon. The Student Senate member willingly jumped into the dumpster to help sort through bags of trash to find out how much Eastern students really recycle. (0) comments
