Study abroad students applied what they learned about recycling on their travels through Australia and New Zealand. The Eastern communication department decided to take a group of students within the department to both of these islands during the month of June. (5) comments
The Gulf of Mexico's oil spill documentary, produced by geography instructor Cameron Craig, is now officially in a thorough research stage, delaying its release date until further notice. When Craig and his team returned from the Gulf Coast, he expected to release the documentary in the fall. (2) comments
Once considered the primary authority on American agriculture, Gilbert Fite, Eastern's fourth sitting president, died at the age of 92 on July 13. He was born and raised in South Dakota, but has been living in Fort Myers, Fla. since his retirement. He is survived by his wife, June; his two sons; and grandchildren. (3) comments
Eastern Illinois Writing Project gives teachers from Illinois the opportunity to share ideas and writing skills in a four-week workshop. The workshop has teachers coming from northern Illinois down to Vandalia. Also, the teachers teach grades kindergarten to high school. (1) comment
Eastern's tuition rates have increased 6 percent for the 2010-2011 school year, however, some fees remain the same as last year, including the health services fee and the textbook rental service fee. Eastern received a figure close to $6 million on July 9, from the state, reducing the university's fiscal year 2010 budget deficit by 12 percent. The money received is a reimbursement from the state and will help avoid a monetary gap predicted for August. Prior to the state's reimbursement, Eastern's Board of Trustees was contemplating borrowing a credit line of $7 million to address the monetary gap. (3) comments
As the six-week summer session comes to an end, students prepare for finals as well as final papers, presentations, and accumulative homework assignments. Dave Hodgeman, a senior sociology senior, said he is taking summer classes to graduate at the end of the eight-week session. (3) comments
City council approved the closing of Eighth Street from Jackson Avenue to Van Buren Avenue Aug. 14 for the Cub Scouts' Annual Soap Box Derby. The street will be closed from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The council approved the annexation of 1540 West Polk Ave. The public hearing was held before the meeting Tuesday, and Mayor John Inyart said no one came forth from the public to argue against the annexation.
