As the academic school year finally comes to a close, many seniors are anxious to participate in the commencement ceremony on Saturday in Lantz Arena. Eastern students, children and pets came to celebrate good times at the last big event before finals in the Library Quad this weekend. The Truth in Tuition Act shielded current students at Eastern from the blows of a $21 per credit hour increase to tuition for the 2010 fiscal year. The house where Livingston Lord, Eastern's first sitting president, lived was on display Sunday following its yearlong restoration. Lord, president from 1899 to 1933, resided in the two-story Victorian home for all but the first four years of his tenure. Tiffany Turner was elected Student Senate Speaker at Wednesday's Student Senate meeting. As Student Senate Speaker, Turner wants to fix the elections commission so offending candidates and/or parties could be punished, find a different conference to go in place of the Conference for Student Government Associations and get Student Government recruitment in the South Quad. The spring 2009 textbook return deadline is 3 p.m. Friday. Textbook Rental will be open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Despite a growing effort to prevent underage drinking in Charleston, police say the use of fake identification to purchase alcohol or get into bars still occurs.
