Faculty receive student-nominated awards

Daniel Carter was honored with the Overall Teacher Award during the Student's Distinguished Teacher Awards Monday evening. "One of my greatest fears is having a student come to my class and not be inspired and not be motivated," said Carter, an instructor in the early childhood, elementary and middle level education department. The Charleston City Council will vote on a proposed water and sewer rate increase at today's meeting. The proposal would increase rates by 7 percent, and would raise the minimum rate from $9.96 per 1,000 gallons to $10.65 per 1,000 gallons. Mayor John Inyart said the increases are long overdue. Diversity week event segregates to integrate

The Social Justice and Diversity Committee brought together both men and women - black and white - to show stereotypes still exist and how they impact daily lives, with the Archie Bunker's Neighborhood program, held Monday in Taylor Hall. Each person was put into a group of two or three, and given a colored piece of paper representing a demographic in society. (2) comments

Student Government had an emergency meeting at the Thomas Hall Classroom Monday night to discuss how to use the Student Activities Reserve Account before fiscal year 2009 ends. The meeting was in response to Thursday's Apportionment Board Meeting. An additional $40,346 was allocated from the fee-funded board to spend before June 30, the end of the fiscal year. (0) comments

Students march for marijuana

A group of about 20 Eastern students marched across campus in support of the legalization of marijuana Monday. "The March for Cannabis" began at 4:20 p.m. in the South Quad. Students marched around campus stopping at Lincoln Avenue in front of Old Main to inform passing vehicles about their cause. (7) comments

The same search committee will have to restart its hunt for a new chair of the biological sciences department. Mary Anne Hanner, dean of the College of Sciences, said the five biology faculty members who conducted this year's search would comprise the committee again, along with Diane Hoadley, dean of Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences, who will head the committee for the second time. Speech celebrates Lincoln's birthday

Richard Norton Smith thinks there is no excuse for a dull book, dull museum or dull speech - especially when it comes to history. The historian will present his speech "The Triumph of Politics: Abraham Lincoln at 200" at 7 p.m. today in The Theatre of Doudna Fine Arts Center. (0) comments

Despite concerns regarding the educational merit of the Masturbate-a-thon/Sex Positive Fair, the organizers of Tuesday's event stand by it calling it informational and academic. Will Kendall, a sophomore art history major, and Laura Wussow, a junior physical education major, also refuted Mikki Meadows' statement comparing "displaying sex paraphernalia at a sex education event to teaching students how to play drinking games at an alcohol-education event" that was reported in a recent Daily Eastern News issue.
