Two students injured in Doudna

Severity of injuries unknown; concert hall closed indefinitely

Two students were struck and injured by a heavy panel inside Dvorak Concert Hall in the Doudna Fine Arts Center Wednesday evening. The students were sent immediately to Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital Center. Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs, said, at this point, he does not know the severity of the injuries. LGBT supporters debate about religion

The Rev. Seth Ethan Carey, of the United Church of Christ, and Greg Spahn, of the American Humanist Association, debated on whether Christianity is a friend or foe to the LGBT movement. EIU Pride, an organization on campus that represents the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered people and their supporters sponsored the debate "Do Gays Need God?" that was held Wednesday in the Phipps Lecture Hall of the Physical Science building. Unemployment rates throughout Illinois remain stable, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security. The IDES also released monthly figures that show an increase in unemployment in all 12 metropolitan areas in Illinois from last year's rates. (0) comments

UB is coming to Apportionment Board for five additional allocations at the meeting at 7 p.m. today in the Arcola-Tuscola room of the Martin Luther King, Jr. University Union. UB Mainstage is asking for $10, 460; UB Special Events is asking for $25,000; UB Homecoming is asking for $2, 350; UB Comedy is asking for $4,500; and UB Productions is asking for $5, 234. Two students recovering from injuries sustained in Doudna

Updated 6:50 p.m. The two students injured by a heavy panel inside Dvorak Concert Hall in the Doudna Fine Arts Center are recovering. According to an e-mail sent to Eastern Symphony Orchestra members, student Pat Rheingruber sustained severe injuries to his hand and was sent to Springfield Memorial Hospital to see a hand specialist. Residence Hall Association vice president nominations took place at Thursday night's RHA meeting at Thomas Hall to replace former RHA Vice President Michael Andrew who had resigned. At least five people were nominated including Bryn Rich, Matt Triezenberg, Brad Saribekian, Shannon Davis and Karla Browning. (0) comments

Legislation has been introduced in the Illinois General Assembly that would reduce the Fiscal Year 2009 budgets by 8 percent for all state agencies that report to the governor. Eastern is one of those agencies. Wednesday night, President Bill Perry was asked to outline potential impacts that such a cut would have on the university and send it to the legislature for a hearing held Thursday in Springfield.
