Faculty Senate to hear from ad-hoc committee

Faculty Senate will discuss possible changes to the university's foreign language requirements at its meeting today. The senate will hear from the Council on Academic Affairs' foreign-language ad-hoc committee, said Les Hyder, the committee's chair. Vacating alleys, subdivision plan are part of agenda

The Public Works Department advised Charleston's city council to vote no on three ordinances that propose the city vacate three alleys throughout town. The city council will also vote to approve or disapprove a large subdivision concept plan east of University Village, the annual application to participate in the State of Illinois Federal Surplus Program and a grant for the rehabilitation of a building in the Tax Increment Finance District. The Charleston Community Theatre will hold auditions for the Clare Booth Luce play "The Women" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today in the Tarble Arts Center. The audition will consist of reading from the script. The cast will consist of 16 female actresses of all ages. (0) comments

In Jeannie Ludlow's mind, a slur is a word or phrase used to derogate a group of people. "A slur gets its power not from the actual word used, but rather, from the systems of power and oppression that shape our society," said Ludlow, English professor and coordinator of the Women's Studies program. Enhancing and increasing the volunteer service hours has been the ultimate goal of the Student Community Service Office. Rachel Fisher, interim director of the Student Community Service Office, feels with having this office open for four months, they have enhanced what service has been taking place so far. HERC to sponsor educational event inspired by 'Fear Factor'

Program will teach dangers of tobacco through games

The Health Education Resource Center is hoping for a fearful night in the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union tonight. HERC will host a similar version of the TV show "Fear Factor" that is centered on the topic of tobacco in an attempt to increase student awareness. (0) comments

A source of funding is currently not available to add security cameras in parking lots on campus, but the university is considering the matter. Dan Nadler, vice president for student affairs, said the university has been aggressive at adding security cameras within the Student Recreation Center, the University Police Department building, the Martin Luther King Jr. (0) comments

The investment grade energy audit conducted by Eastern and its partner Honeywell International produced $80 million worth of projects, which includes the new Renewable Energy Center and other capital additions and improvements. These improvements will come at no cost to students, taxpayers or the state of Illinois, said Jeff Cooley, vice president for business affairs. (0) comments

Breaking news: Renewable Energy Center plans halted

Updated 11/18 at 1:15 p.m. The Renewable Energy Center project has been put on hold along with the rest of the projects included in Eastern's $80 million audit. "During the development of the project, an unforeseen factor, the current economic downturn, has adversely affected the feasibility of the project," said President Bill Perry in a statement. The divas of drag entertained a crowd of more than 500 people as they lip-synced and danced to the latest Rock, Pop and R&B music Monday night in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union. Amaya Mann, Aurora Lamont Carrington, Ceduxion Carrington, Chanel Carrington, Kelasia Karmikal Carrington and Leiloni Stars brought their extravagant wear and matching high-heels to sing, dance and get the audience involved in their performances.
