Arts and Humanities deans retiring

Dean Johnson, associate dean Lynch worked here since 70s

Dean James Johnson and associate dean Jeffrey Lynch for the College of Arts and Humanities will retire in 2009. Johnson will retire on July 1, 2009, and Lynch will retire on Dec. 31, 2009. Blair Lord, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Johnson has been an excellent dean for the College of Arts and Humanities, and his accomplishments have been many, with the most recent accomplishment being his leadership through the challenges of constructing the new Doudna Fine Arts Center. Pauline Cade hopes to end violence against women and children Saturday night. Cade, advocacy program director for HOPE of East Central, and other members of the group are hosting "A Night of Hope" from 6 to 10 tonight at Jackson Avenue coffee. Fire at Alpha Tau Omega house causes several thousand dollars in damage

The Charleston Fire Department responded to a call at the Alpha Tau Omega house Thursday night after an undetermined cause created several thousand dollars in damage, said Pat Goodwin, assistant fire chief for the fire department. Mollie Kelley receives a credit card application at her home almost every day. The financial education coordinator at the Health Education Resource Center said when she goes home, there is a big stack of credit card applications on her desk. Charleston Challenge Duathlon steps off Saturday

Runners and cyclists can combine their passion at the Charleston Challenge Duathlon Saturday. A duathlon is a multi-sport activity that starts with a run, followed by a bike ride and then another run. Local runner Scott Barry designed the course that has been set for the duathlon. (0) comments

Every Tuesday and Thursday night, the Newman Catholic Center fills with students and teachers. The students, or amigos, pair up with their teachers, who are called friends, and start their individual sessions as the clock strikes 10:15 p.m. The one-on-one sessions are part of the Amigos and Friends program, which aims to teach English to immigrants.
