The July 1 deadline has come and gone without a new state budget being signed into law. After threats of cuts by Governor Rod Blagojevich and his recalling the General Assembly back into session, Eastern's 2.8 percent increase in state allocations may not be a reality. (0) comments

Charleston to the rescue

With the flooding of the Mississippi River, the Illinois Incident Management Team was sent to help affected areas. Kris Phipps, Charleston fire chief, Pat Goodwin, assistant fire chief, and Gary Hanebrink, safety officer at Eastern, are all a part of the Coles County Incident Management Team and were sent to provide assistance in Quincy and Alton. Charleston contractors have something to look forward to with the increase in Illinois wage rates. During Tuesday's City Council meeting, the council approved the prevailing wage rates as set by the Illinois Department of Labor. The prevailing wage rates are set for contract jobs, based on the union scale, for public projects such as the construction on City Hall. (0) comments

Drunk driving crackdown

When people attend social gatherings on July 4, they better watch how much they drink before they go behind the wheel. The Charleston Police department and Eastern's University Police Department are collaborating to combat drunk driving. "We will show zero tolerance," UPD Officer Ryan Risinger said. (0) comments
