Gender, age shift in RA hiring

The resident assistants for Eastern are 58 percent female and 42 percent male, according to Amelia Turner, student worker for the Housing Office and a sophomore family and consumer sciences major. "There are more female floors than there are male floors, so that makes sense," said Mark Hudson, Director of Housing and Dining. (0) comments

All on-campus classes that are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. or after tonight are canceled because of inclement weather, the university announced. The university made the announcement shortly before 6 p.m. tonight on its website. However, university spokesperson Vicki Woodard said she does not expect a decision to be made tonight regarding the status of Wednesday's classes. (0) comments

The Charleston City Council will vote tonight on a proposed historic district on Sixth and Seventh streets between Eastern and the square. The historic district would require any property owners within the district to receive a certificate of appropriateness if they were to undergo any major structural changes. (0) comments

Winter storm warning issued into morning hours

The National Weather Service in Lincoln issued a winter storm warning at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The warning was in effect until 6 a.m. today. The National Weather Service predicted two winter storm systems would affect east- central Illinois today. The winter storm warnings come after unusually warm weather. (0) comments

Student officials prepare for re-elections

The possibility of one person running for election to every student government position on the ballot may be explored this April. Student senator Eric Hiltner investigated that option during Monday night's student government election informational meeting. (0) comments

Stereotyping in the medical field

Laura Ellingson, professor at Santa Clara University, said that women are not valued in the health care system. Ellingson opened Women's History and Awareness Month with a presentation on women as "other" in the health care system. Have you ever, "failed to value her?" Ellingson asked the audience. Jason A. Abernathy's drug trial was postponed on Monday. Abernathy is charged with possession of a methamphetamine. Abernathy is accused of having methamphetamine on May 1 at the grain elevator where he was employed. A hearing to review the case, as well as the case against Abernathy stemming from charges of aggravated domestic battery, was set for March 14 at 2:30 p. (0) comments

Heather Webb said plagiarism and collusion are the most common forms of academic dishonesty at Eastern. Collusion occurs when a group of students works together on an individual assignment. "There are also some forms of academic dishonesty that students may not readily recognize as being dishonest, such as fabricating a doctor's note in an effort to be excused from a class or to gain additional time to complete an assignment," Webb, director of judicial affairs, said. Campus Emergency Notification System to be tested today The second test of Eastern's new emergency notification system will take place today at 10:30 a.m. Eastern has three ways to notify the campus in an event of an emergency. The Emergency Notification System includes a siren/public address system that sounds a "pulse tone" to notify students, staff and faculty to check their Eastern email for important information.
