While some students don't mind walking to get around, most can't stand to part with their vehicles

Having a car at Eastern is a must for many students, while others opt to walk as much as they can. Although students can walk anywhere on campus, there are many students who don't think they can live without their cars. Drew Jacobs, a sophomore psychology major, has received more than 20 parking tickets and had his car booted twice and towed once during the last three semesters.

Snow covered the ground, tree branches and cars on Thursday morning. With the snow comes slick streets covered in slush and ice, making drivers more cautious as they make their daily trips. Charleston's Public Works is prepared to make the streets safer for commuters.

The renovation of 7th Street Underground will begin within the next three weeks. Student Body President Ryan Berger expressed his excitement about the project getting underway at Wednesday night's Student Senate meeting. Phase one of the process will total approximately $100,000, Berger said.

Open longer: Eastern facilities get ready for finals

Students will be able to stay later and study longer at the Gregg Triad Computer Lab next week. The student computer lab, which houses 60 computers, will be open continuously from 2 p.m. Sunday until 10 p.m. Dec. 16. Finals week is the busiest time at Eastern's student computer labs, specifically the Gregg Triad Lab, said Michael Hoadley, assistant vice president for academic affairs for technology.

Apportionment Board responds to appearance of bias

Previous members of fee-funded boards can serve on AB

Members who have been on fee-funded boards in the past are currently eligible to serve as members of the Apportionment Board as long as they are no longer affiliated with that fee-funded board. The main purpose of the AB is to decide where students' money will go, since the student activity fee they pay every year is meant to benefit them as a whole.

With Christmas quickly approaching, Toys for Tots is in full swing on Eastern's campus and throughout Coles County. The toy drive has provided drop boxes for new and unopened toys at more than 40 locations across campus from Nov. 28 through Dec. 9. "Toys for Tots is a nationwide toy drive organized by the United States Marine Corps Reserve," said Tony Kwiatkowski, organizer of the Coles County area Toys for Tots drive.

Santa will be coming to town with a reindeer to help start the Christmas in the Heart of Charleston Festival. He will be introduced in the parade at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the square. The parade will kick off the Heart of Charleston Festival, said Jim Davis, a member of the parade committee for the past three years.

This coming Saturday comedian Sonya D will perform at 7th Street Underground in a University Board-sponsored show. Sonya D is a Chicago-born and raised comic who has been touring and headlining universities and clubs from around the country on the RJE Comedy Cabaret Tour for the past three years.

Jazz ensemble closes season on popular note

Eastern's Jazz Ensemble attracted an audience that filled half of the Grand Ballroom Thursday night for its last performance of the semester. The ensemble played a wide variety of jazz compositions to strike interest in all preferences of jazz. The group is fresh off a recent performance at the 37th and 38th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival.

Eastern's Health Service Medical Clinic recently welcomed two new members to its staff. Kimberley Hollender, M.D., and Kathie Blesch, a certified physician's assistant, are the newest faces on the medical clinic's team, and they both said they are happy with their new jobs at Eastern.
