Reaching out to teens

Charleston Teen Reach has been helping guide teenagers in the local community to better paths. The Charleston City Council proclaimed April as Teen Reach Awareness Month at last week's meeting to help raise awareness of Charleston's program and the benefits it has had for the community.

One more day available for students to cast vote at polls

Students across campus filled the Student Recreation Center, Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, Carman and Coleman Halls Tuesday to vote in the Student Government elections. "Quite a few people are voting," said Carolyn Beck, a freshman political science major and a Student Senate member.

Alumni Association funds clock tower

A clock tower is being built between Booth Library and Lumpkin Hall to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Alumni Association. "We wanted to do something for the benefit of the university to celebrate our centennial," said Steve Rich, the executive director of the Alumni Association.

Greek Spotlight: A generation of experience

For the past 18 years, the secretary in Eastern's Greek Life office has devoted her time to helping the Greek organizations on campus run smoothly. Norma Taylor has been the secretary in the Greek Life office on campus since August of 1986. Taylor spends her days working on different tasks for people involved in Greek organizations and others on campus who have questions about Greek Life.

Eastern's Technology Services is preparing to install spam-filtering software on the campus e-mail network, Chat Chatterji told the Faculty Senate yesterday. Chatterji, the associate vice president for information technology services, said the system, which does not have a set implementation date, would mark potentially unwanted e-mail and let the user decide how much of it is trashed.

Construction on the Interstate 57 overpass on state Route 16 started Sunday night on three beams that were damaged last year in an automobile accident. Eastbound Route 16 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily as the repairs will be made overnight throughout the course of next week.

Helping out in Haiti

Students provide funds for third world country

Imagine raising thousands of dollars to help provide for those who survive on less than a dollar a day. This is exactly what the Haiti Connection does. The Connection is a group of students who spend time and effort raising money for those in the third-world country of Haiti.

Students and faculty will get a chance to learn about Latin America today from a Brazilian scholar. Gamma Theta Upsilon and the Department of Foreign Languages is sponsoring a lecture titled, "Society and Territory in Latin America: Historical and Contemporary Issues.

Instead of sitting around complaining about funding, the Student Action Team is taking steps to change Eastern's future. Today eight members of the Student Action Team are traveling to Springfield to "Storm the Capitol." The Student Action Team is going to highlight concerns that students have toward the lack of funding coming down from the state capital and the hikes in tuition.

Swing classes give students new opportunity

Dancing to their own tune

Tuesday was the first of a three-session swing dance class aimed toward relieving stress. The EIU Ballroom Dance Society presented the first of its De-Stress Swing Fest classes at the Student Recreation Center dance studio. The classes are intended to serve the dual purpose of relieving stress while trying to raise money for the newly recognized student organization.
