Column: Sour deal for the candy man

Among the racks of candy cigarettes, atomic fireballs, lemon heads and nostalgic candies stands a victim of fate, bad timing and a city determined to change. His dream of running a candy shop in downtown Mattoon has become a nightmare, filled with big bills, lawyers and bitterness, leaving him wondering what to do next.

With the initial uproar from the decision to change WEIU radio to the Hit-Mix silenced, the change has shown some positive aspects. Those who were upset about the change to the Hit-Mix seemed to be mainly angered about the format that would be initiated. Instead of having a relaxed format that allowed for creativity, including more student interaction for both the employees of the radio station and the listeners, fears were that this would be more of a robotic radio station.

We at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are disappointed that the Charleston High School band didn't try to find a more humane way to raise funds than by holding a donkey basketball game. Animals do not comprehend or willingly participate in sporting events, yet donkeys are commonly dragged from gymnasium to gymnasium for use in basketball games.
