Some people may wait for hours, even days to try out for "American Idol," a reality television show aired on Fox that helps talented singers in furthering their careers. For some who compete on the show, it may be about the fame, glory and even a record contract.

The Faculty Senate approved a motion for the Office of Grants and Research to publicize faculty research by means of an annual online report. The office publicizes faculty research through a quarterly newsletter and is working to get press releases out to inform the university about the research that is being conducted by Eastern faculty, said Bob Chesnut, director of grants and research.

Having good diet habits, regularly exercising and releasing stress are some measures people can take to prevent vascular diseases, or diseases that affect blood vessels, said Carl Sather, a speaker giving "Recipes for Prevention" Tuesday night. To educate Charleston community members and Eastern students about vascular diseases, the first "Recipes for Prevention" seminar was held to offer healthy suggestions.

Some sorority members on Eastern's campus have a mom away from home. Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Gamma Delta sororities have caring women known as house moms who live in their houses and watch out for the girls. Wanda Bence takes care of the members of Alpha Gam while Wanda Reid watches over the Tri Sigma members.

Many people turn to a support group to connect with others and find answers to questions. Now Resident Student Organizations (RSOs) have a group specified for this concern. The Student Leadership Council (SLC) was formed in 2003 during Unity Week. "We strive to unify the RSOs," said Matt Kulp, Student Government vice president of Student Affairs and creator of the SLC.

Student Government leaders are looking to usher new members into a more professional Student Senate. A bill to create an oath for inauguration of new members to draw attention to the responsibilities of their office was tabled last Wednesday. "(The oath is a way) to make (inauguration) more of a formal event to hold senators more accountable for what they're doing," said Cole Rogers, chairman of the Internal Affairs Committee.

Approximately 10 Eastern faculty members had the opportunity Tuesday to learn how to get students involved in active learning. Jeff Stowell, professor of psychology, was the facilitator for the focus group that presented learning techniques that can be used for faculty in their classrooms.

The Charleston City Council voted Tuesday to give $1,000 to Eastern's Athletic Department to help cover costs of a tournament this weekend. Eastern will host the National Junior College Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 4 and 5.
