After weeks of preparation, the hard work paid off when Jennifer Ether was crowned Miss Black EIU 2005, Saturday night . Just minutes before the four contestants took the stage in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, Ether, a sophomore journalism major, said she was busy, setting up last minute props and trying to get the people participating with her all together.

The Council on University Planning and Budget received an update, Friday, on Eastern's budget and enrollment initiatives for fall 2006. Gov. Rod Blagojevich's proposal for fiscal year 2006 would give no new funding to Eastern and cut pension benefits for new university employees.

Lack of student effort this year disappointing

After a lack of student voting in Tuesday's primary election, the Student Senate, Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council are hosting a forum to give students an opportunity to become informed and involved in the election process. The forum, which is scheduled for March 23, will give City Council candidates a chance to inform students of their goals if elected.

Swaying with the music, an audience was entertained by performances in a talent show called "Puttin' on the Hits" that took place on Friday evening in the Grand Ballroom of Martin Luther King Jr. University Union. John Coffey, the director of the show and academic adviser of early childhood education, opened the show by singing "Love Train" by the O'Jays with two other faculty members who served as back-up vocals.

'Women like that' dancing in the McAfee spotlight

The EIU Dancers were "In the Spotlight" this weekend, performing a variety of dances during their annual student-/director-choreographed show. About 700 people came to McAfee Gymnasium to see the company perform dances ranging from ballet to tap during shows at 7:30 p.

The Newman Catholic Center and the Haiti Connection will be sponsoring a vigil at 5 p.m. today in front of the Newman Catholic Center in honor of the one year anniversary of the force down of the Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The purpose of the vigil is to remember what happened in Haiti a year ago, said Roy Lanham campus minister for the Newman Catholic Center and the adviser for the Haiti Connection.

Mildred Pearson has been named Eastern's new director of faculty development, and she's bringing years of education experience to the position. Pearson, assistant professor in the department of early childhood, elementary and middle school education, will serve a two-year term as director of faculty development.
