Debate sparked at the City Council meeting Tuesday after the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 88 made a public statement asking that City Manager Scott Smith be removed from his position. The statement, which was read by union president Justin Peterson, said Smith's decision to appoint external candidate Paul Welch was "no less than insulting," and asked the council to help the police union and Smith reach a compromise.
Eastern is looking into a new computer system, and the Faculty Senate heard about it Tuesday. The system, SCT Banner, is a group of programs designed specifically for higher education computer systems. Under the current system, information is stored in different databases and formats.
As of Dec. 31, the Subway in the University Union Food Court will no longer be accepting Sub Club Cards in exchange for free sandwiches. The Food Court Subway, along with most Central Illinois Subway stores, are discontinuing the stamp program that allowed customers to use eight Subway stamps to redeem one free 6-inch sandwich.
The closer it gets to a marathon, Roger Stoner lays awake at night counting each heart beat, making sure he is prepared for the race. He counts 50 heart beats per minute, right on track. He trained four months for the Napa Valley Marathon this past March.
Though Eastern provides Internet access to assist students in retrieving information for educational purposes, recreational file sharing programs are blocked from the school's server because they cause a shortage of bandwidth and slow Internet speeds. Until recently, a large number of students were again downloading music from a newer file-sharing program called Ares.
A fifth person from an accident that occurred early Friday morning, which resulted in a car being overturned in the Town Branch Creek, was found and identified by the Charleston Police Department on Monday. The woman, an Eastern student, was identified by police as Lindsey Branson, 20, of Clariton Hills.
Students might want to think twice before picking up that soft drink while they're pulling an all-nighter during finals week. The Academic Initiatives and Retention Committee's (AIR) monthly information flyer for resident assistants, "The Brain Fart", showed that soft drinks, along with many other regular snack foods, are the worst things to eat when studying.
Community members, faculty and students will have the chance to enjoy Christmas early this year by attending "Christmas Around the World" tonight. Four Christmas trees that have been decorated by area grade school students and Eastern's international program will be available to view.
The Student Senate will hold elections today to decide who will act as Student Senate speaker next semester. The Student Senate speaker runs all senate meetings, oversees all of the senate committees and acts as a voting member of the senate. The speaker is one of the few positions in the senate not elected by the students.
In order to spark campus-wide conversation, Booth Library will be sponsoring the first annual One Book, One University reading project. With the help of the American Library Association's program One Book, One Community, Booth Library decided to bring the idea to the campus level.
