Karla Sanders, director of the Center for Academic Support, will report to the Faculty Senate Tuesday about Electronic Writing Portfolios.

It is simply seeing what the data gathered from EWPs over the last few years suggests, said senate vice chair Jeff Ashley.

"Like any other program, we would like to know how the EWP is working, how it is benefiting our students and what the challenges are," said senate chair Assege HaileMariam.

"This sort of self-evaluation is necessary for institutions to evolve," Ashley said. "The people looking at these may find nothing, or they may find that, institutionally, we are strong or weak in certain areas in terms of writing."

"For these reasons, we have invited the director, Karla Sanders, to have a conversation with the senate," HaileMariam said.

The senate also will continue making committee appointments.

"We have filled the standing committees and are going to try and fill any ad-hoc committees on Tuesday," Ashley said.

Committee appointments on the agenda include faculty forum committee, Distinguished Faculty Award committee, Luis Clay Mendez Distinguished Service Award committee and budget transparency committee. The senate also will discuss the need for a bylaws committee.

Ashley said he is honored and a bit unsure about taking over as vice chair.

Tuesday will be the second meeting Ashley will attend as vice chair. Ashley assumed HaileMariam's position as vice chair after John Allison resigned as senate chair to go on sabbatical.

"I'm a rookie and will make rookie mistakes, but John (Allison) and Assege (HaileMariam) are fantastic, and I can always call Jean Wolski (my predecessor) who did a great job last year," he said.

The senate will meet at 2 p.m. in Booth Library Conference Room 4440.
