When music majors play a student recital, family, friends and fellow students usually attend the event to show support.

On Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. in McAfee North Gym, music majors Jacqueline Bretz and Elizabeth Kelling will play their student solo recitals, a graduation requirement for music majors. "Every music major has to perform a solo recital in order to receive their degree," said Dan Crews, dean of the college of arts and humanities. "They usually do this in their junior or senior year."

Bretz will be playing the clarinet for the recital, and Kelling will be playing percussion.

"The recital gives students the opportunity to show the music they have been rehearsing all year," Crews said.

He said that these recitals can be a big deal for students because it shows what they have been learning all year. "It's a way for them to showcase their skills and abilities," Crews said.

Crews also explained that Bretz has been an "Excellence in Fine Arts" student since her freshman year. The award is considered one of the highest honors for music students.
