Comedan Sonya D returns for second laugh

This coming Saturday comedian Sonya D will perform at 7th Street Underground in a University Board-sponsored show.

Sonya D is a Chicago-born and raised comic who has been touring and headlining universities and clubs from around the country on the RJE Comedy Cabaret Tour for the past three years. The RJE Comedy Cabaret Tour is a long-running comedy tour aimed specifically at college audiences.

Over her 12-year career as a comedian, Sonya D has performed with such high-profile acts as Chris Rock, Dennis Leary, Martin Lawrence, Kanye West and Damon Wayans.

In addition to the comedy tour, Sonya D has made television appearances on The Jaime Foxx Show, BET's Comic View and Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam among others.

Sonya D has appeared at Eastern regularly over the past three years. Last year she was quoted as saying that Eastern has "probably the most mature crowd of students that I have worked with in a long time, and they support these events."

In March of 2004, Sonya D hosted the Def Poetry exhibition, which was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union. The exhibition invited comedians and poets to perform here at Eastern.

Krystle Williams, public relations coordinator for the University Board, said the UB has been very active in promoting Sonya's performance.

"For these comedy events we typically expect to have around 100 to 150 students to attend," she said.

The show is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. on Saturday at 7th Street Underground. The event is free for Eastern students as well as for the general public.
