Briefs: Aspiring chemistry scholar recognized

Chemistry major Rebecca Grove was named a 2008-2009 Barry S. Goldwater Scholar for her findings in a recent research project.
Grove, who just finished her junior year, studied the crystal growth of organic compounds and viewed their individual atoms with X-ray diffraction. Kraig Wheeler, an associate professor of chemistry, directed the research.
Grove is one of 321 students in the country to be honored by the scholarship program, which is the premier undergraduate award in science, math and engineering. She will receive $7,500 toward her undergraduate degree.

Community rehabilitation group relocates
Narcotics Anonymous has recently begun a weekly meeting to support recovering addicts, but the group will not meet three times a week in Mattoon.
"There's a lot of Eastern students who go to the Alcoholic's Anonymous meetings (in Charleston) and we want to invite any other Eastern students who may need help (recovering) from drug abuse," said Carmen Richey, NA program coordinator.
The meetings will be held on Mondays and Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ located at 1708 Dewitt Rd, Mattoon.

Upward Bound becomes Eastern-bound
Yet another group of high school students will occupy Eastern's campus starting Sunday until June 28.
'Upward Bound' is a program sponsored in conjunction with Kankakee Community College that, according to its Web site, "assist(s) college-bound high school students in overcoming barriers to pursuing a college education."

Generations unite for gardening workshop
Gardening begins at 9 a.m. June 9 and 10 for families enrolled in the Gardening with Grandkids workshop. It's a hands-on, make-it-and-take-it workshop for children in grades one through five with their grandparents but the class recently filled up.
