Architect speaks about Doudna

People gathered at the Tarble Arts Center Atrium Wednesday to hear architect Antoine Predock express his ideas for the design of the new Doudna Fine Arts Center.

Predock has received the 2006 Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects.

He showed images of previous designs to capture the audience.

One picture included a fine arts center where light reflected throughout the building creating intricate patterns on its walls.

"I'm anxious to see how this new building will come (out)," said June Krutza of Charleston.

Predock is an architect whose work reflects the heart and the spirit of nature.

"I've never seen designs like (that)," said Brent Pegues, a sophomore elementary education major. "There was so much detail."

Predock pointed out that human activity is the realm between the earth and the sky.

"His work is phenomenal. It's mind boggling," said David Wolski a professor of the theatre arts department. "He is extremely talented."

When approaching this assignment, Predock made a collage of texts and photographs of poets that commented on the Charleston area.

"Your building should embody the memory of life," Predock said referring to the new Doudna Fine Arts Center. "It should be a marvelous intriguing destination that draws you in like a trap."

The Doudna Fine Arts Center is estimated to open in Fall 2007.
