Budget looks bleak, says Rose

Abstract:
Eastern is tentatively scheduled for a 2.8 percent budget increase in state appropriations for fiscal year 2009, said Rep. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet. But he's uncertain that the additional funds will make it to Eastern. The Illinois House of Representatives finished day two of budget discussions on Wednesday, and Rose said he voted "no" on everything because the proposed budget has a $4....

Despite this article lacking focus and having a ton of jumbled facts, can you, Mr. Kambic, explain to me how a proposed budget would have a deficit? A budget is based all on projections. So, why would legislators want to project our revenues to be less than our expenses, thus creating a deficit?

One answer to that question could be because we have a budget shortfall for FY08, we don't have as much revenue coming in to match the set expenses for FY09. But that is all hearsay.

Good reporting would have cleared up that confusion.

The den has become a waste of student funds during the summer. There is very little actual news, and what is in there is generally full of logical fallacies and pointless meanderings about what could be news-worthy. I don't know who the editor and chief is, but they should be ashamed of what they are doing. It seems like most of these people work for the DEN in the summer because they couldn't get jobs with them when all of the real journalists are here. It may not be incredible then, but atleast most of the stories are intelligible. Maybe the advisor should consider pulling the plug on the paper during the summer, and offering these kids workshops on how to be real journalists.

BTW, the reason you have photo pages should be to supplement news, not to replace the lack thereof. Maybe if you did some research into the area, maybe some feature-y stories on charleston, you could build more content. But, that would probably just amount content displayed in much the same way as this article.

This is why I won't pick up another DEN until next year- hopefully there will be a new Editor and Chief with a little more command over people's writing skills (or lack thereof).

Well, this is really quite funny. First off, to address the point made by the masked man known as huh, I would like to say that the reason there is a projected deficit is probably based on the fact the the Blagojevich administration and the Democrat controlled General Assembly has injured Illinois almost irreparably. Businesses are blazing trails out of Illinois which is decreasing our tax base. This erodes our state's projected revenue past that of what should be recession conscious low numbers. Also, in most cases, a deficit results from excess spending. The reason, that there is a projected deficit when you should always project things to be even, is a little thing called the other party. While the Dem's are in control the GOP is going to make them earn a Dem friendly budget and fucking over higher eduction by slashing its budget,or demolishing the prospect of new job growth in Illinois by hanging a rhetorical "NO CAPITALISM" sign on the state is not going to endear you to the Republican leadership. This little situation makes you dot all the eyes and cross all the tees so that the people of Illinois know exactly what Springfield is doing...even if Springfield doesn't.

In response to Mike. The DEN's operating budget comes from several sources, not just student fees. Some of these areas are ad revenue, alumni donations, and community support. It is completely hilarious to me that you think that the Academic Year DEN is superior to the Summer Edition. Here's a news flash..it usually is not high quality and is usually filled to the brim with misquotes, logical fallacies, and indications of not looking for facts that in front of reporter's faces. Its nothing new. But I do believe that the DEN has a much better staff and leadership right now. Speaking of not looking at things that are right in front of you...5-22-08 issue, far right side of the page, under the Budget Looks Bleak headline, right beside BY and right above Editor-in-Chief....

Are you an Illinois senator or representative? An aide? A spokesperson? Please God are you a credible source of information? Because if you are, I would suggest emailing Rick Kambic because your insight on the budget woes of Illinois could have been used. Kambic's failure to explain the budget crisis and failure to get multiple sources is apparent. This article is a one-sided piece of crap that does nothing more than confuse readers.

But Bobbie were you go wrong is in your criticism of the DEN. Do not bring up the age-old criticism of each article having misquotes in it without providing examples. It weakens your argument and makes it laughable. Show me examples, and then we can start having an intelligent debate.

Second, this is a student newspaper. No body is perfect, especially students who are learning the trade through an open forum.

Finally, do you really believe the staff and leadership is better now than in the past? Seriously? Have you read the summer DEN? The reporting has been atrocious. Even Kambic, the Editor-in-Chief, can't report. His graduation article was a long-winded list of facts that did not even have a quote from a graduate. And he even went to the event! (Or I at least hope so). This budget article also is exemplary of the piss poor reporting in the summer DEN. Sounds to me a better staff would raise the quality of reporting - not lessen it. Same goes for leadership.

Lets not start the which is better debate. Anyone who has seen a paper knows it's laughable. There are tons of people in the staff box and with bylines but the content just is not there.

As for this article, I'm glad we've turned into a propaganda tool for Chapin who has said on numerous times in public how he hates the Governor.

Why is one-third in bold? And why doesn't this have more state representatives talking about the state budget than just one representative, who has openly and publicly bashed Blagojevich? Seems a little one-sided, with just a tinge of bias in it.

Well, when you have Democrats themselves bashing Blagojevich, one represenative saying last year that he is a "maniac", it might be a bit hard for anybody, let alone a college newspaper, to get the other side without going straight to the Governor's Office, or to Senate President Emil Jones who enables him. Judging from the past cuts to Eastern and higher education, I highly doubt either of these people would be keen on being interviewed by the DEN. While it might be good for Mr. Kambic to try to interview a Democrat in the area (the only immediate ones are Rep. Flider and Rep. Jaccobson), I don't think you'll find a lot of diversity of opinions as far as the Governor go. When we went to Springfield last year, we had Democrats and Republicans alike tell us that they want to help us, but the Governor won't let that happen.
