Column: Bush not an error

Abstract:
I would like to begin today by giving my congratulations to President-elect Barack Hussein Obama. This has been said many times, but it is still worth repeating: His election as the first African-American president is a huge achievement, and shows how far our country has come since the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln....

So George Bush is great because the Heritage Foundation, a Conservative Think Tank, says so? Well then I am great because my family says so. Everyone look for my op-ed next week entitled "Why I rule" I will be using sources such as my mom and my old hockey coach to formulate my argument.

Think Tank-A place where people who make tanks are paid to say what they think.

While Mr. Sainer's support of President Bush can be admired as principled, it is woefully inaccurate.

Mr. Sainer's mention of the attack on the Sears Tower is a case in point. Seven men were arrested with great fanfare in spite of the fact that no weapons or explosives were found and two trials have resulted an acquittal for one defendant and mistrials for the other six. In fact the prosecutor on the case said that the group didn't have the means to carry out such an attack.

Mr. Sainer also mentions the 2006 plot to target transatlantic flights as another example of Mr. Bush's leadership. According to published reports, the Bush Administration had little or nothing to do with uncovering the plot. According to other reports, the administration revealed discovery of the plot before the British had enough evidence. In fact of the 24 suspects arrested, only three have been convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, and none have been convicted of targeting aircraft. There were no bombs constructed, no airplane tickets ever purchased, and most of the alleged "terrorists" didn't even have passports.

Mr. Gainer's summation of the economy suggests that Mr. Bush should be given all the credit for whatever growth there was but take none of the blame for the "bind" that threatens a global depression like that of the 1930s.

Finally, Mr. Gainer's assertion that invading Iraq was the "right thing to do" because the current Iraqi government sold its supply yellowcake uranium to a Canadian company isn't logical. The syllogism suggests that a legal sale of the substance under a "elected" government proves that Iraq needed to be invaded and have its citizens killed by coalition forces and internal strife. Mr. Gainer further declares a victory in Iraq that no one else in the world has recognized.

President Bush may have been the target of more ridicule by "liberals and satirists" than any other president in US history, but Mr. Gainer fails to make a compelling argument that the ridicule is undeserved.
