you SG people are a bunch of idiots, the politics is ridiculous. i cant believe the people constantly relected only due to lack of votes from students.

Well, Matt. As a newly elected senator, I look forward to changing your opinion of Student Government.

i was on student government actually. but please do do something to change it. the same people who do nothing keep getting the privilege of high up positions which is just unfair to the student body. charleston sucks enough as is.

"United Party of Students"

If someone had told me that was the name of a party running this year, I would have thought it was a joke. Didn't we already have the Students United Party and the Student Unity Party?

The line between reality and parody in Student Government is perforated.

To the new senate member wanting to impress the student body: I suggest you try to rangle up more funding for RSOs and fight about the diversity requirement. That never gets old.

I don't get what the importance of a party name is. It's just a label for a group, and the acronym worked well, so why not use it? What exactly do you expect in a student government party name, Shakespeare?

As for things getting old, cynicism over student government sure is high on that list. If you took the time to comment on Ryan's positivity, why not make suggestions for Senate to address and possibly implement? Most Senators probably will read this and would see what you have to say, and even negative, legitimate comments are better than cynical apathy.

Who cares, 12,000 students give or take and 300 some voted. Obviously no one cares or believes that thes people do anything except pad their resumes. The same people get elected each time because the only people who vote are people who know the candidates, and they only do it out of obligation, not becaus they honestly believe that anyone else would do the job any diufferently

Well, hell, if your spelling is any indication of your intelligence, I would rather you not vote, and leave it up to those who can form cognitive sentences

Travis Bounds;

student senator - check
member of the nerd patrol - check

Cognitive sentence?

posted 12/12/07 @ 6:22 PM CST

Would that be a sentence relating to the mental processes of perception and memory?

Perhaps you meant "cogent," meaning relevant or incisive.

C'mon, don't be sidetracked by making fun of Travis. And btw, he's not a Student Senator. Nerd patrol, maybe.

But are there any legitimate concerns out there? Or just a lot of talk about how irrelevant the Senate may be? I'm a brand new Senator, ran 2 unsuccessful independent campaigns, but finally joined up with a new party of good people who hope to do a lot of good for the students of Eastern, not merely pad a resume or go on a power trip. But if the students aren't willing to talk with us, that kinda frustrates our job.

It isn't the students' fault, don't try to blame this on them.

It is great that you have good intentions. I always found you to be an excellent candidate and even voted for you.

But what power does Student Senate have to make things better for students? Virtually none. They make endless recommendations, because that is all they can do. Then it is up to the exeuctives of the university to decide if they want to listen to those suggestions.

The only thing a Senate Member can do is to take a project up on their own, a la Adam Howell.

Oh, I'm sorry if it came across that I'm trying to blame all students. My comment was more in reference to some specific commentators on here. I personally believe that it is a Senator's responsibility to actively seek out the opinions of students, especially those he/she doesn't know personally, to have a stronger grasp of who all he/she is representing.

In response to the Senate being, for a lack of a better term, impotent, I agree and disagree. You mentioned Adam Howell; his name along with a few others come to find when thinking of effective Senators whose ability to spark change were marginalized. I think it is necessary for those Senators, because they are few among many, to not only take on projects of their own, but to go out of their way to incorporate as many voices as possible into that process. Good things are possible, we just unfortunately have our work cut out us.

I thought Howell's Student Action Team was an excellent use of student government's time and efforts. I wouldn't call it being marginalized. When I think of the successes of SG, that is what I think of.

I'm not sure "change" is really necessary on Student Senate. It is what it is. But a few single strong student leaders, regardless of position on the government, can really effect positive outcomes when they put their minds to it. If Student Government does any real good, it is putting those sorts of people together and giving them a chance to interact.

AH HA...Travis Bounds; The High Nerd of Eastern, doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Better bone up on your cognents and cognitives, there buddy. Hey, I've got an idea, you could do it while you guys are having one of your "important senate meetings."
